Tis the season for amazing gluten-free desserts! What’s your favorite?

frosted gluten free sugar cookie starIn preparing for Thursday’s family yuletide meal, I have been enlisted to bring the dessert. This task is so much easier at Thanksgiving, because I can throw together some gluten-free pies–pumpkin and pecan–and call it good. But my family doesn’t have a traditional favorite for the Christmas meal, and these days there are so many gluten-free recipes online, the only limitation at this point has to do with available ingredients and the kitchenware to prepare whatever confection I choose.

I have been combing through various sites with lists of cookies and various other delectables for something somewhat familiar but at the same time, a little exotic. And I think I found it in this collection on Epicurious.com, 5 Decadent Gluten-Free Desserts to Bake for the Holidays. While they all look scrumptious, I’m leaning toward the Torta di Ricotta e Polenta, which blends some of my favorite flavors of almond and lemon in a cheesecake made of ricotta, making it a perfect finishing touch on an otherwise rich and heavy meal.

Plus, I plan on whipping up a batch or two of my favorite Iced Gluten-Free Sugar Cookies which are flavored with just the tiniest dash of mace, taking me back to my childhood. They hold up well, for several days unfrosted, though few can resist to let them hang out long enough to find out just how long they last. Believe me, the holidays just aren’t right without them.
